Natural Dyes Workshop and Trunk Show with Color Me Happy

  • 11500

We are thrilled to announce a one-time natural dyes workshop led by our guest, Michelle Salyers of Color Me Happy. Michelle is visiting us from Indiana for one day to offer this special event for the wrap-up weekend of the yarn crawl. As a dyer myself, I can't tell you how excited we are to be able to offer this class.

Spend the morning with us dying a set of 5 mini skeins using a gradient dye technique. Then join us for the reception and get to know Michelle, shop Color Me Happy fiber and kits, and wrap up your yarn crawl with a truly special experience.

***Please note the trunk show is open to all, the workshop requires pre-registration.***

Gradient Mini Skein Set Yarn Dying Workshop with Michelle Salyers

Saturday, July 27

11am - 1pm

Cost: $120 includes 5 mini skeins and all materials

Learn about natural dying, create your own set of naturally dyed mini skeins

What to expect

The focus of our time together will be on the joy of creating a special set of mini skeins of yarn with natural dyes. We will provide a brief orientation to natural dyeing, color choices and application tips, and most of the session will be spent painting your own skein set. Instructions for at-home steaming to complete the process will be provided.

Dyeing is messy, especially using the technique of hand painting. We recommend wearing clothes and shoes that can withstand the risk of stain. While the materials we are using will not dye your clothes, they can make stains (and we will talk about why there’s a difference!).

Included:

A set of 5 mini skeins of Color Me Happy Fiber Arts yarn and supplies to dye:  20g skeins of fingering weight merino/cashmere/nylon blend; totaling 400 yards), natural dye materials, instruction, and a handout with resources.

We can help you create a coordinated set depending on your desired effect(e.g., a fade, or complementary color blocks).

About Michelle and Color Me Happy

Michelle Salyers and her friend Linda Williams established Color Me Happy Fiber Arts Studio in 2022 as a collaborative fiber arts studio focused on natural dyeing. We have been working together as researchers and teachers for 25 years, first as professors in an academic medical center, and now as natural dyers in a fiber arts studio. Both are well steeped in the world of fiber arts. Michelle has been knitting most of her life and also enjoys weaving and spinning. Linda grew up sewing and doing cross-stitch before finding knitting more than 25 years ago. During the pandemic, we came together to start a new venture that combines our love of fiber, nature, color, research, and teaching. We believe that color and creativity are key influencers of our mental and physical health, and that making things with natural materials is one way to ground and connect us to the ecological systems around us in ways that make us all healthy and happy.
